Welcome to Signspotters! Thanks for dropping by.
Why, you might ask, would I bother constructing a web site
with photos of road signs and traffic lights? And a reasonable question it
would be.
It has long been an interest of mine, for reasons I've never been quite
sure of. Ever since I was old enough to know what a road sign was I was
always looking out for them from the back seat of my parent's car. And
looking out the back window to see the other side of speed limit signs (this
is when they were still in miles per hour). Railways are actually my main
interest, so naturally I've included some railway pages as well. I don't consider myself to be a 'Roadgeek' in the usual sense of
a roads enthusiast. Perhaps just a traffic control device enthusiast. I'm
usually only interested in the 'roadside furniture'.

I've noticed over the years that some of the signs I
remember from 20 or 30 years ago are no longer around, so these days I'm
trying to photograph representative examples of various signs etc. as you
never know how long they'll be around. As road signs and traffic lights are
everyday sights, few people bother to take photos of them. As a result, it
can be hard finding information on earlier examples of traffic control. When
was the last time you saw a traffic light with STOP written on the red lens?
A round warning sign? Or a sign with glass bead reflectors?
Do you remember (if you ever
knew) when traffic lights had the red and amber light come on at the same
time before the green one came on? Do you remember the red Give Way signs or
the more elusive GIVE WAY TO THE RIGHT signs? What about intersections with
only single red or yellow flashing lights? I could go on. Perhaps you have
forgotten these things, or never knew they existed. Well, that's what I aim
to do with this site. It shall be a place to record some of this history, as
well as the present - which is, after all, the history of the future. Much
has been changing since I begun this site in 2003 and its previous
incarnation in 2001.

So you'll find photos of new and old signs and traffic lights
here. And perhaps after seeing some of the signs and signal here, you'll realise that like
everything else in this world, they are gradually changing. Often so gradual
that most people don't tend to notice - until it is too late.
Over the last few years, I've been adding to the collection
of sign and signal photos and while I don't intend to photograph every kind
of road sign around (there are simply too many varieties) I am attempting to
cover examples of the more common as well as some of the more unusual ones.

MPH speed derestriction sign.
Anyway, I shall provide examples of common well placed signs as
well as unusual or badly designed and signs and examples of the sort of
things that just make you sit back and wonder "what were they thinking?"
If you can assist by supplying information or photos, please
don't hesitate to contact me.
